The Afghan New Year of 1385 was celebrated in March 2006 with a gathering of Afghan men, women and children in the Acton community building. The hall was beautifully decorated with spring flowers.
The meeting consisted of two main parts. The first included poems and speeches by society members. The second part included live music and singing.
The event started with a recitation from the Holy Quran by Mr Javed Enayat, followed by a speech from Mr Taeb (deputy of SAR). Additionally, Mrs Shirzad recited a poem to the audience. A very exciting part of the programme included an old Pashto drama which used to be broadcasted in Afghanistan on the afghan radio”zarghoon taal” (rainbow). It was a written by Nang Yusufzay and was performed on the day by Nang Yusufzay and Hussein Enayat.
In the second part, a live singer and band played traditional Afghan and Western music by Mr Samsor. The afghan traditional dance was performed by young girls and boys. In this event, the afghan society were committed to looking after the guests and contributed a great deal. News of this celebration was also broadcasted on BBC radio.
Below are some pictures of the event.
